shutterstock_182368979smRecently, I was speaking with a clinician about why sitting in 90/90/90 all day is not a realistic expectation for you, or for your patient. What is interesting is that many individuals (including some state surveyors) still think that patients should be in 90/90/90, thus I thought that this would be a nice subject for this month.

  • The human body biomechanically is not designed to sit all day
  • It is important that sitting is dynamic and changes throughout the day

As clinicians we want:

  • Symmetry
  • Accommodation of medical concerns
  • Prevention of secondary concerns
  • Promote function!
  • This doesn’t have to be 90/90/90

Optimal positioning requires the clinician to think through the following:

  • Function
  • Comfort and pain
  • Stability and balance
  • ROM of joints
  • Muscular flexibility
  • Tone, spasticity, and reflexes
  • Individual preferences and habits

If you have any patients with whom you or your team are struggling to find proper positioning, please do not hesitate to contact The PostureWorks.  We would be happy to work with you to find the best wheelchair seating and positioning intervention to meet the goals of your patient.

Happy Physical Therapy Month!
