Existing Wheelchair Seating​: Sling seat wheelchair, ​20” without
seat cushion, drop stop leg rest pad

Positioning / clinical Issues: Unable to independently provide
pressure relief. History of poor wound healing. Unstageable
sacral/coccyx wound at 3.8×2.0 cm

PostureWorks Intervention: Matrix Medium Profile Cushion

Outcome: ​Wound healed in less than 4 weeks. Pt has remained
sacral wound free for more than 3 months

Feedback from​ Therapist: ​“Initially, our wound nurse was reluctant
to try the Matrix cushion given the patient’s history of prolonged
wound healing and the nurse’s affinity for air cushions. Given the very
positive outcome and quick wound healing with this patient, she is
now a believer in the Matrix.”

Stage 4 Wound – MATRIX MEDIUM PROFILE ®

Patient: 76 y/o female

Primary Diagnosis: Stage 4 Coccyx Wound

Positioning / clinical Issues: Pt had stage 4 pressure injury measuring 1.8cm
long x 1.6cm wide x 1.2cm deep. Pt also experiencing 6-7/10 pain on buttocks as
a result of the wound and therefore was taking 5mg Oxycodone 2-3 times a day.
Pt was spending very little time in wheelchair as a result of the pain, which limited
social interactions with other residents and quality of life.

Existing Wheelchair Seating: Pt was sitting in standard wheelchair with gel
cushion prior to intervention.

PostureWorks Seating Intervention: Matrix Medium Profile Cushion

Outcome: Pt’s pressure injury is fully healed and she now has 0/10 pain on
buttocks. Pt still has PRN order for 5mg Oxycodone, but is no longer utilizing the
medication. Pt is able to tolerate sitting in her wheelchair, and is able to propel
herself in wheelchair to/from meals and activities independently. She has
returned to socializing with other residents now that she is able to tolerate sitting
in her chair.

POSITIONING & PAIN CASE STUDY:
MATRIX Medium Profile
Trinity, Mount Saint Francis in Woonsocket, RI

Brianne Lienkamp, NP

Patient: 73 yo male

Primary Diagnosis: Muscular Dystrophy, buttocks/hip pain from old hip replacement

Existing Wheelchair Seating: Geri chair with foam cushion

Positioning / clinical Issues: Pt presented with 6­10/10 pain on buttocks/hip after
sitting in geri chair for only 5­10 mins. Pt required 10mg Oxy, scheduled 3x/day, for pain
control to allow him to tolerate sitting in chair to eat meals and to participate in leisure
activities.

PostureWorks Intervention: Matrix Medium Profile18x18 wheelchair cushion in pt’s
geri chair.

Outcome: Pt is now able to sit pain free in geri chair with Matrix cushion for at least an
hour. Pt can also sit up to 3­4 hours in his chair (following the 1 hour pain free) with
only 1­2/10 discomfort. Pt now only requires 5mg Oxy scheduled in the morning and
5mg Oxy PRN in the afternoon (which he now only takes on occasion). He now enjoys
sitting at his desk using his laptop as a leisure activity.

Quality Outcome Measures Impacted by Intervention: Pain, Quality of Life

 

Feedback from Pt: “I am very pleased with the results of the cushion. I can now sit up
in my chair more comfortably while eating meals and while communicating on social
media on my laptop.”
