Engage APOD Case Study

Brighton Gardens, Saddle River, NJ

Treating Clinician:  Brenda Mahon OTD, OTR/L

Patient:  Female, 82 yr old

Primary Diagnosis: CVA x 5 yrs ago

Existing Wheelchair Seating: Foam Cushion

Positioning /Clinical Issues:

Pt presented to OT with a significant posterior pelvic tilt and complaints of discomfort throughout the day. Pt required frequent repositioning which increased her burden of care immensely.  Additionally, sliding forward on her old foam cushion increased her fall risk and increased her risk of acquiring a sacral wound.

Prior to receiving the Engage APOD Low Profile cushion, pt could only tolerate 3-4 hours seated in her wheelchair daily secondary to complaints of pain and discomfort.  Additionally, she exhibited great difficulty with self-feeding secondary to poor postural alignment.  To make matters worse she could no longer engage in several of her treasured activities in the community.

PostureWorks Intervention: Engage APOD® Low Profile cushion 16×16

Outcome: Pt no longer requires repositioning; she is able to tolerate sitting in her wheelchair for 6 hours a day, she can feed herself independently without struggling and she can participate in all of her favorite activities.

Feedback from Therapist:
“Thanks TPW for improving the quality of life for my residents again! The Engage APOD cushion improves the lives of individuals who spend their day in wheelchairs.”
